A duffer is someone who is not very good at something — a bit , a bit slow, not skilled. It can mean “not very clever”, but it is often smaller and kinder than calling someone stupid: a duffer at tennis is just bad at tennis. Older British English uses it a lot; it can sound old-fashioned or gently teasing, not like a sharp insult. You may also hear it in sport, especially golf, for a weak player. It is informal. Though actually, the same spelling has had other lives (an old slang cheat; a useless mine), but a will almost always meet this “not much good” person.
