If someone is in high dudgeon, they are angry or offended — they feel they have been treated badly, and they show it. People almost always say it in that set way, with high. You do not often hear dudgeon by itself. The feeling is real (hurt pride, a bit of “how dare they?”), but the phrase is a little old and a little like a stage. Writers often use it with a smile, as if the person is making a big show of being upset. It is not a swear word, and most young people do not use it in the street; you will meet it in stories, jokes, and newspapers. Though actually, without high, many readers will not be sure what you mean.

組成Origin uncertain. Some have linked it to Welsh dygen (“anger”), though a major English dictionary rejects that. Others have guessed an old word for trash, or an Italian verb meaning “to put in shadow” (a similar idea to taking umbrage). There is also an older English dudgeon for a knife handle, from Middle English dogeon, probably from Anglo-Norman or French (compare French douve, “stave”); whether the anger sense is the same word, nobody is sure.
