Ducting is the system of pipes or tubes that carry air, liquid, or cables through a building — or the tubing itself, sold in lengths. The most common picture is air: the big metal or plastic tubes that hide above a ceiling and move warm or cool air. There is also cable ducting, a channel that keeps wires tidy and safe, and ducting for fumes in a lab or a kitchen. A single tube is often just a duct; ducting is the stuff, or the whole run of it. It is a practical, slightly technical word — you hear it from builders and electricians more than from storybooks.
