A duchy is the land — and the rights that go with it — belonging to a duke or a duchess. Think of it as their territory, not just their house. In older Europe a duchy could be almost a small country. A few still have a public life: the Duchy of Cornwall and the Duchy of Lancaster in Britain are real estates that bring in money for the royal family, though actually they are run more like businesses now than like medieval kingdoms. Luxembourg is a grand duchy: a whole country whose head is a grand duke. Students sometimes mix duchy with dukedom. A dukedom is the rank, the title; a duchy is the land. In everyday talk people blur the two, and even careful writers are not always tidy about it.
組成From Middle English duche, from Anglo-Norman duché, from Old French duc, or from Medieval Latin ducātus, from Latin dux (“leader”). Doublet of ducat and dogate.
