Dubstep is a kind of dance music. What hits you first is a heavy, wobbling bass — the low sound you feel in your chest — over a fairly slow beat for club music. It grew in South London in the early 2000s. The name comes from dub (older bass-heavy music with roots) plus 2-step (a UK garage dance style); it was first written as two words, dub step, from 2001. Though actually, after about 2010 a louder, more crashing US style is what many younger listeners mean by dubstep, and older UK fans often say that is not the same thing. Club and internet talk, not formal.
