    The DT’s (also written DTs) are a medical condition: after drinking far too much alcohol for a long time, a person who suddenly stops can shake hard and see things that are not there. Doctors treat the real illness as an emergency. In everyday English, though actually, people often use “the DT’s” as a joke or a stretch — for a bad hangover, shaky hands after a night of drinking, or anyone who looks a wreck from alcohol — even when it is not that dangerous illness. That joke use is informal and a little old-fashioned; it can sound if someone is truly ill. You will hear “he’s got the DTs” more in stories and jokes than in a hospital.
