A DSO is a British medal given to officers in the Army and the Navy for special, outstanding service — usually brave or excellent work in war, though actually it has also been given in other hard campaigns. It is a serious honour, not a sports prize. In very formal British writing you may see it after a name (Colonel Smith, DSO), in the same place you might expect a degree. Civilians do not receive it. You meet it in history books, war films, and old notices more than in everyday talk. It is not an American medal, and it is not given by Taiwan.
