A dryer is a machine that makes things dry, most often clothes. After you wash shirts, you put them in the dryer; hot air turns until they are dry. Americans usually write dryer for this machine. British English often says tumble dryer for the clothes machine. Bathrooms have a hand dryer. Some people also call a hair dryer a dryer, though that is a different small machine you hold. Though actually, dryer can also mean 'more dry' (the comparative of dry: this towel is dryer than that one). Many writers prefer the spelling drier for 'more dry,' and dryer for the machine — but you will see both. In careful labels, clothes dryer keeps the machine clear.
組成dry + -er. As the machine: the -er ending means 'thing that does it' (a thing that dries), from Middle English driere, dreyere ('one who dries'). The same spelling can also be dry + -er as the comparative ('more dry').
