To dry-clean clothes is to clean them with special chemicals, not with water and soap. You take a coat, a suit, silk, or anything that would spoil in the washing machine to a shop. The shop uses a liquid chemical that lifts dirt and oil; the clothes come back dry, not dripping. 'Dry' here does not mean 'wipe it with a dry cloth.' It means 'not washed in water.' In everyday talk: 'I need to dry-clean this jacket,' or 'take it to the dry-cleaner's.' The shop and the business are dry-cleaning; the person or shop may be a dry-cleaner. It is an ordinary, slightly careful word — home talk and shop talk, not poetry.
