In rugby, and in a few other football games, a dropkick is a kick you make like this: you drop the ball from your hands and kick it the instant it meets the ground, or just as it starts to come up again. Players use it to score (a drop goal) or to send the ball a long way down the field. The timing has to be exact — too soon or too late and the kick dies. The word is also a verb: you can dropkick the ball. It is ordinary sports English, not fancy. Though actually, wrestling and action films use “dropkick” for a jump-kick with both feet in the air, which is a different move; this entry is the ball-game one.
