Driftwood is wood that has been floating in the sea or a river, or that the water has left on the shore. Salt, sun, and wear it down, so it often looks pale, grey, and twisted — not like a fresh branch from a forest. People pick it up to burn, to make furniture or art, or just because the shape is interesting. Though actually, in Taiwan it is not only a beach souvenir. After a typhoon, valuable trees wash down from the mountains, and there are rules about who may take 漂流木 from the river or the shore. The picture in the word is simple: the wood has drifted.
