A dressing-down is a serious talking-to: someone in charge speaks to you because you have done something wrong. You give one or get one: she gave him a dressing-down; he got a dressing-down in front of everyone. A boss, a coach, a teacher, a parent might do it. The tone is sharp and , stronger than a quiet word and a little more set-piece than just “she shouted at him.” It is slightly old-fashioned and a bit British-flavoured — you meet it in stories and news more than in the chat of young people, who might say a telling-off instead. Though actually, it has nothing to do with clothes. (Dress-down Friday, when offices allow casual clothes, is a different phrase.) Informal to neutral, a little dated.
dressing-down 指一頓嚴厲的責罵，通常是有權力的人因為你做錯事，生氣地把你叫過去訓一頓。老闆、教練、老師或家長都可能這樣做。可以說「give someone a dressing-down」（給某人一頓訓斥），也可以說「get a dressing-down」（挨一頓訓斥），例如「he got a dressing-down in front of everyone」（他當著大家的面挨了一頓罵）。語氣尖銳、帶著羞辱，比輕聲提醒重，也比單純的大吼更像一場正式訓斥。這是比較老派、帶點英式味道的說法，多見於故事和新聞，年輕人通常會說「a telling-off」。這個詞跟衣服沒有關係。
