A dreidel is a small four-sided spinning top used in a family game at Hanukkah, the Jewish winter festival of lights. Each side has a Hebrew letter (nun, gimel, hei, shin — in Israel the last one is often pei). You spin it; the letter that lands up tells you whether to take from the pot, put something in, take half, or do nothing. The pot is usually chocolate coins or nuts, not real money. It is a luck game for the holiday table, not a sport, and not a word for any ordinary toy top. People who celebrate Hanukkah know it the way other families know a Christmas ; many English speakers who are not Jewish may never have seen one. You almost only meet the word in that holiday world.

組成Borrowed from Yiddish dreydl. It is probably a blend of dreyen (“to spin, turn, twist”) and trendl (an older word for a spinning top). The spinning half goes back through German to a very old root meaning “to turn.”
