A dray is a low, flat cart with four wheels, used in the past to carry heavy loads — most barrels of beer from the brewery. A strong horse, a dray horse, used to pull it through the streets. You will meet the word in history, in old city pictures, and sometimes still on brewery signs; you will not meet a dray in ordinary modern traffic. It comes from Old English dræġe, a kind of net you drag, from the same Germanic root as draw, “to pull.” Though actually, on the page it looks a little like dry, which is a completely different word.
