A dram is a small drink of strong alcohol, especially whisky, and the word feels most at home in Scotland. Someone offers you a dram the way other people offer a drop or a small glass. Outside Scotland it can sound friendly and a little old-fashioned; in Scotland it is ordinary. It is not a modern bar measure with a fixed legal size — it means a small amount. Though actually the older meaning is a small unit of weight, still used in some pharmacy and talk, and the drink meaning grew from that idea of “just a little”. The word came from Greek drachmē, a handful and a unit of weight (and a coin), through Latin and French. It is not drama, and it is not computer DRAM, which is a different thing written in capital letters.
