DPP is a job title, used mainly in Britain and in countries that took their court system from Britain. It stands for Director of Public Prosecutions. That person is the head of the government lawyers who take people to court for serious crimes. They do not decide if someone is guilty — a judge or a jury does that — but they do decide whether the state will bring the case at all, and they speak for the public, not for one private person. You will hear DPP in news about England and Wales, Ireland, Australia, and a number of other places. In the United States people almost never say it; they say district attorney or attorney general instead. Though actually, in Taiwan the letters DPP will make most people think of a political party first. That is a completely different DPP. This legal DPP is a person and an office, not a party.
