Downy means covered in, or filled with, very soft, fine hair or feathers. A baby bird looks downy before it grows the stronger feathers it will fly with. A peach can feel downy because of the soft fuzz on its skin. The “down” in this word is a bird’s fluffy under-feathers — the stuff that makes a winter coat warm — not the “down” that means toward the floor. Though actually English spells those two “downs” the same, they are different words. Downy is a gentle describing word; you meet it in nature writing and on clothes that use those feathers.
