A downspout is the pipe that carries away from the roof of a building, down the wall, and toward the ground or a drain. Rain first runs into the long open channel along the edge of the roof (the gutter); then it falls into the downspout. You usually see downspouts at the corners of houses. Without one, water would pour off the roof and splash the walls. It is an everyday building word, not a fancy one — the kind of thing you notice when leaves block it and the water .
