Dowelling is wood in the shape of a long round rod, sold in lengths, that you cut up to make dowels — the short pins that join two pieces. You buy a stick of it, then saw off what you need. Though actually, in British English the same spelling is also the name of the work: dowelling can mean joining things with those pins. American spelling often uses one l: doweling. If you are in a British timber yard or reading a British woodwork book, this is the rod on the rack, not a finished piece of furniture.
