Dounreay is a place on the north coast of Scotland, in Caithness. English speakers know the name because of the nuclear site that stood there. The best-known reactor, the one inside a big round building like a giant ball, stopped making power in 1977. Though actually, that was not the end of all nuclear work on the site; other reactors and research went on later, and the long job of taking the site apart is still what the name brings to mind in news and official talk.
