Douglas is the capital of the Isle of Man, a small island in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland. It is the island’s main town: the place of government, the harbour, and much of the shopping and ferry traffic. People who follow the Isle of Man TT motorcycle will see the name often, because the course runs through the town. The name is older than the capital role; it comes from words for a dark or black stream, and the town sits where that river meets the sea.
