Doughty means brave and determined — the kind of person who keeps going and does not back down. It is an old, , slightly story-like word. You meet it in writing about heroes, soldiers, or stubborn people, and sometimes in a warm or slightly teasing way: “our doughty captain.” It does not sound like everyday speech; a friend would more often say brave, tough, or determined. It is a compliment, not a joke about doubt. Though actually, it is easy to misread because it looks a little like doubt, but it has nothing to do with being unsure. There is a rare noun use, “a doughty” for such a person, taken from the adjective, but almost all real uses are the describing word.
組成From Middle English doughty, from Old English dohtig / dyhtig (“strong, able, brave”), from Proto-West Germanic *duhtīg. It can be split as dought + -y, but dought is not a living everyday English word now.
