A douche is a wash that a woman puts into her vagina, often water mixed with something such as vinegar, to rinse the inside. The same word is also used for the tool she uses to do this, a bottle or bag with a tube. The idea came into English from French, where douche means a shower; in English it did not stay as the ordinary bathroom shower — it became this more private, medical-sounding wash. You will see it on old product labels and in medical talk. Doctors now often say it is better not to do this, because the body already cleans itself and extra washing can upset that. In American slang, people also stretch the word and call a person a douche when they think that person is rude or foolish; that use is informal and , and it grew from this same word. The medical sense is the older, plainer one.
