A dormer is a window built out from a roof, so it sticks up in its own little box with its own small roof. Houses with attics often have them: the slope would be too low for a normal wall window, so the builder pushes a window out of the roof. That brings light into the room under the roof and gives people a bit more space to stand. In house talk, “dormer” can mean the whole sticking-out structure, not only the glass; people also say “dormer window.” It is an ordinary building word — you will meet it in house ads and with builders more than in casual chat. It is not a skylight: a skylight sits flat in the slope, while a dormer stands out from it.
組成From Middle French dormoir, “sleeping room,” from dormir, “to sleep.” These windows belonged to attic rooms where people slept, so the window took the sleeping-room name. (A later English reading as dorm + -er is sometimes shown; the French sleeping-room story is the one to keep.)
