A doozy is something extreme — extremely good, extremely bad, extremely strange, or just huge. “That was a doozy of a storm” means the storm was a really big one. The feeling is and mostly American. You would not put it in a careful school essay unless you want a talking-to-a-friend voice. It can praise or complain; the sentence around it tells you which. Nobody is quite sure where the word came from. It showed up around 1903. It may come from daisy (people once used daisy to mean something excellent), or from the name of an Italian actress, Eleonora Duse. A common story says it comes from the Duesenberg car, but that story is wrong — the word was already around more than ten years before that. Some people point to Polish duży (“big”), but that is probably not right either, and old papers do not show it. When we do not know, it is honest to say so.
組成Origin unknown. First appeared in 1903. Perhaps from daisy, the flower (used to mean “excellent”), or from the actress Eleonora Duse. Not from the Duesenberg car — the word is older than that. A link to Polish duży is unlikely.
