A doorknob is the round handle on a door. You take it in your hand and turn it to open the door. Many older houses have this round kind; many newer doors have a long lever you push down instead. Strictly, the round one is the . People still say doorknob most readily for that ball-shaped handle, and some speakers stretch it to mean any door handle.
