Door-to-door means going from one house to the next along a street: knock, talk, then the next door, then the next. People do this to sell things, collect money for charity, or ask for votes. You can use it before a noun (a door-to-door salesman) or after a verb (they went door-to-door). The picture is house by house, not a casual visit to one friend. In many places this kind of selling is less welcome than it used to be; some people treat it as a nuisance and do not open the door. There is a related use in travel and delivery — “door-to-door” as all the way from your house to the other person’s house — but the heart of this word is still that trail of front doors.
