Doolally means crazy — not thinking in a normal way, or behaving as if you have lost your mind for a while. It is British, informal, and a bit old-fashioned, though still understood. People often say go doolally or gone doolally, the way they say go mad. It can sound serious (“the heat sent him doolally”) or half-joking (“I’ll go doolally if I have to wait any longer”). You would not use it in a medical report; it is everyday speech, and it can sound if you point it at a real illness. Though actually, the word comes from a real place. Deolali was a British army camp in India. Soldiers waiting a long time there sometimes became ill or very strange, and doolally tap meant that camp fever (tap from a Persian or word for fever, and further back from ). Later, doolally on its own came to mean crazy. American English hardly uses it.

組成From doolally tap, “camp fever,” then “madness.” Doolally is from Deolali, a former British army camp in India, about 160 kilometres northeast of Bombay, where soldiers waited to go home. Tap is from Persian or Urdu tab, “malarial fever,” ultimately from Sanskrit tāpa, “fever; heat; pain.” People then started using doolally as an adjective on its own.
