A doofus is a stupid person — someone who has just done something or silly. It is American, informal, and quite soft. Friends call each other a doofus when someone forgets the keys or walks into a glass door. It sits closer to “silly fool” than to a hard insult.

You would not put it in a formal letter. Some people find it a little old-fashioned, but it is still said, often with a laugh.
You would not put it in a formal letter你不會把它寫進正式的信裡 Some people find it a little old-fashioned有些人覺得它有點過時 but it is still said但還是有人在說 often with a laugh常常帶著笑意
Though actually, it is almost always a person, not a thing, and it is not a school subject word. It does not mean dangerous or cruel; it means “not thinking clearly, just now.” Tone of voice does a lot of the work: said with a smile it is teasing; said with a hard face it still stings, but it is not among the strongest rude words. You do not call a clever plan a doofus.
Though actually不過其實 it is almost always a person, not a thing它幾乎都是指人,不是指東西 and it is not a school subject word也不是學科用詞 It does not mean dangerous or cruel它不是指危險或殘忍 it means “not thinking clearly, just now”而是指「現在腦筋沒轉過來」 Tone of voice does a lot of the work語氣扮演很重要的角色 said with a smile it is teasing帶著笑容說是在打鬧 said with a hard face it still stings板著臉說還是會刺人 but it is not among the strongest rude words但它不算是最重的粗話 You do not call a clever plan a doofus你不會把一個聰明的計畫叫做doofus
組成Perhaps a change from earlier goofus (from the 1920s), with help from Scots doof, “simpleton.” Scots doof comes from Low German doof, “deaf,” which also had a sense “stupid,” and that Low German word is related to English deaf. Some people have wondered if dupe played a part too. All of this is a perhaps, not a sure story.
