    Donegal is a county in the far northwest of the Republic of Ireland, on the Atlantic coast. It is known for a long wild shoreline, hills, and for Donegal . In some parts, Irish is still an everyday language. One thing English speakers often get wrong: Donegal sits in the old province of Ulster, but it is not in Northern Ireland. It is in the Republic. The English name is an anglicization of Irish Dún na nGall, 'fort of the foreigners' — the 'foreigners' in that old name were outsiders who had settled there, not a comment on today's visitors.
