Dominica is a small island country in the Caribbean Sea. It has been in the Commonwealth since 1978. The capital is Roseau, and in 2014 about 73,000 people lived there. It is not the Dominican Republic: that is a much bigger country on a different island, with a different capital. English speakers often mix the two names up because they look so close. Columbus's crew sighted the island on a Sunday, so they borrowed the Latin name Dominica — 'the Lord's Day', which is how Sunday was named in Latin. People sometimes call it the 'nature island' because so much of it is still green and steep. If you need to be extra clear in English, say 'Dominica, capital Roseau'.
