When you domesticate an animal, you take a wild kind and, over a long time, make it able to live with people — to work for them, or to stay in the house as a pet. Dogs were once wolves; cows, horses, cats, and chickens have the same kind of story. also talk about domesticating plants: wheat and rice were wild grasses that people slowly made into crops. That is still the same idea: something wild is brought into human life. The verb is fairly formal. You meet it in history, science, and news about animals, not much in playground talk. Though actually, people stretch it as a joke about humans too: “Marriage domesticated him” means home life made someone quieter and more settled. That is loose. You cannot really domesticate a person in the animal sense; you are only borrowing the picture. Training one pet is also not quite this word — training is what you do with an animal that is already living with us.
