This is not a pile of coins. When something is a dollars-and-cents matter, people are looking only at the money — cost, profit, what you can count. Feelings, beauty, and 'what we wish' sit outside. It is American English, mostly in newspapers and meetings, and it feels practical rather than warm. You will usually see it with before a noun: a dollars-and-cents question, a dollars-and-cents decision. Though actually, it does not have to be about US money; speakers use it for any hard look at cost, even in other countries.
dollars-and-cents 字面上不是指美元和美分，而是只看錢的實際收支，像成本、利潤和能算出來的東西，感情、美感或「我們希望的」都不在考慮之內。它是美式英語，多見於報紙和會議，語氣務實、不太溫暖。名詞前通常加連字號，像「a dollars-and-cents question」或「a dollars-and-cents decision」。它不一定跟美金有關，只要是很實際地算成本，哪裡都可以用。
