Dolefully means in a very sad way — how someone looks, speaks, or moves when they are heavy-hearted. “She smiled dolefully” is a sad smile, not a happy one. Like doleful, it is a little old-fashioned; many people would just say sadly. Use it as an adverb (it tells you how), not as a describing word in front of a noun — that job belongs to doleful.
