Doggerel is poetry that is silly, rough, and not trying to be great art. The rhymes come cheap, the beat is simple, and the feeling is often a joke: a birthday card, a funny song, a few lines to make a class laugh. Though actually, the word can sting. If you call a serious poem doggerel, you are not calling it light; you are saying it is weak, , and a bit stupid. Writers sometimes put the word on their own light poems with a smile, as if to say they know this is not high art. It is an old word, and it has always had a little bite in it. People use it in talk about writing more than in everyday chat. It is not a kind of poem about dogs.

組成Probably from dog + the old ending -rel, a suffix that makes a word sound smaller or worse, from the late 1300s. The dog here is the same kind of dog as in Dog Latin: not the animal, but a mark that something is the low or fake kind.
