When a book or a pile of paper is dog-eared, the corners have been folded over, or they are soft and torn from a lot of handling. The picture is a dog’s ear: some dogs have ears that flop and fold, and a page corner bent down looks a bit like that. People often say it of a favourite book that has been read again and again — though actually the fold is not always an accident. Plenty of readers bend a corner on purpose to mark the place, like a cheap bookmark. Still, when we call a book dog-eared we usually mean it looks used, not new and tidy. You will also hear it stretched a little, about a plan or a joke that has been taken out so often it feels worn. Informal, everyday English; slightly old-fashioned in a warm way.
組成From dog + eared (“having ears of a certain kind”), modelled on the older dog’s-ear, because a bent page corner looks like a floppy dog’s ear. You can also take it as dog-ear (to fold a page corner) + -ed, though dog-eared was written down first.
