Docklands, with a capital D, is a large modern area of expensive houses and offices in East London, along the River Thames. It was built mainly in the 1980s on land that had been working docks, factories, and poor housing. It includes Canary Wharf, with its tall glass towers, and London City Airport. People say “in Docklands” or “the Docklands” the way they say “in Manhattan”: they mean this place, not any dock area in the world. Though actually other cities have used the same name (Melbourne, for example), in British English, if someone just says Docklands, they almost always mean London. The old industry is gone; what you see now is money, offices, and new flats on the water.
