In country dancing and square dancing, a do-si-do is a set move. You and your partner walk around each other, usually passing right shoulders, and you keep your back toward the other person as you go around, then you end up facing them again. It looks a bit like two people circling back to back. The person who calls the dance shouts “Do-si-do your partner!” and everyone knows the step. You can use it as a noun for the move, or as a verb: they do-si-do. You will almost never hear this outside folk dancing, barn dances, or stories about them. Though actually, the name comes from French for “back to back,” even if English speakers no longer hear those French words in it.
