    DNA is the long, thin substance inside almost every cell of a plant, animal, or person. It carries the information that says how that body is built and how it works, and children get a mix of it from their parents. Police use it to match a person to a hair or a cup; doctors use it to look for illness; family tests use it to guess where lived. You say the letters D-N-A, not a word. People also stretch it: Service is in their DNA means it feels built-in, not that anyone looked at a cell. As a verb, to DNA someone is to take a sample, often with a swab in the mouth, so it can be tested — police and hospital talk, not kitchen talk. Informal speech still treats the noun as one familiar thing, like TV. Though actually, a gene is not the same as DNA: DNA is the whole string of material; a gene is one small instruction sitting on it.
