A djinn is an invisible creature with special powers in Islamic stories. In the old tellings, people say God made djinn from a kind of smokeless fire, the way he made humans from earth. A djinn can help you or hurt you; it has its own mind, and it is not a pet. English also jinn. Strictly, one is often a djinni or jinni, and djinn is the usual plural, though many English writers just say a djinn for one and move on. The word is a little in English. In everyday talk, people who only know films may picture a genie in a lamp who grants wishes. Though actually, that film picture is later and much softer. In the old stories a djinn is closer to a person you cannot see than to a toy that grants wishes — it may ignore you, trick you, or refuse.
組成From Arabic. The dj- spelling is an older European way of writing that Arabic sound; it is the same word as jinn.
