Djibouti is a small country on the coast of northeast Africa, on the Horn of Africa, where the Red Sea meets the Gulf of Aden. Its neighbours are , Ethiopia, and Somalia. France used to rule it; French is still used in official life, alongside Somali, Afar, and Arabic. The capital city is also called Djibouti — country and city share the exact same name. A 2014 count put the population at about eight hundred thousand. In English we capitalise it, because it is a place-name. People say it roughly like “ji-BOO-tee”; the written D is not a hard English d. Though actually, the port matters more to the rest of the world than the size of the land: ships pass this coast on a very busy route. You say Djibouti, or the Republic of Djibouti in formal writing — it is a proper name, not a common noun.
組成Unknown. The country was named after its capital city. Possibly borrowed from French Djibouti. Multiple theories exist as to the older source, including Afar gabouti (“plate”) or gabood (“plateau”).
