Diwali is a Hindu festival of lights, kept in autumn (usually October or November, following the moon, so the date moves). Families clean the house, draw patterns on the floor, set out little oil lamps, share sweets, and often set off . Many people honour Lakshmi, a goddess of good fortune, and the story of Rama coming home after years away. and Jains keep it too, with their own reasons. It can last several days; the main night is the one with lamps. In India and in many Indian communities abroad it is one of the biggest days of the year. In English you also meet Deepavali — same festival, especially in South India.
組成Borrowed from Hindi दिवाली (divālī), from Sanskrit dīpāvali, literally “a row of lights”: dīpa “light” + āvali “a series, a line, a row.” Deepavali is the same name in another shape.
