A diuretic is something — often a medicine, sometimes a food or drink — that makes the body produce more urine, so you pass water more often. Doctors give diuretic pills when they want extra fluid out of the body, for example with high blood pressure or swollen legs. Coffee, tea, and alcohol have a mild diuretic effect, though actually that is much weaker than a real diuretic tablet, and people often it. The word works as a noun (“a diuretic”) and as an adjective (“diuretic drugs”). It belongs in hospitals and pharmacies, not in everyday chat, unless someone is talking about their medicine.
組成From Middle English diuretyk, from Old French diuretique; ultimately from Ancient Greek διουρητικός (diourētikós). By the look of the English pieces: diuresis + -etic — the kind of thing that causes diuresis (more urine).
