    To dither is to keep being unable to make a final decision. You go back and forth, you change your mind, you stand at the edge of a choice and do not step. You dither over a menu, dither about which job to take, dither between two colours. It is informal, and it sounds especially British. There is a kind edge and a sharp one: sometimes it only means you are unsure; sometimes it means you are wearing other people out by not choosing. As a noun, a dither is that state of not settling. In a dither can also mean flustered and agitated, not only undecided — though actually those two uses sit close together, because both come from an older idea of . A short pause is hesitate; dither is the longer, inability to finish the choice.

組成It does not split in modern English. It is a variant of older didder, from Middle English dideren, 'to tremble'. Other stories (a relative of teeter, or a sound-word) have been suggested; those are not certain.
