A disused building, railway, mine, factory, or airfield is one that people have stopped using. The place is still there; nobody works it or travels on it any more. This is especially British English, and it is very common in signs and news about old lines and empty sheds. It is quieter than abandoned. Abandoned often adds the feeling that people left in a hurry, or that nobody looks after it. Disused just says: it was used, and now it is not. Though actually, a disused railway can still be walked, photographed, even loved; the word does not mean 'worthless', only 'out of service'. Do not use it for a cup you have not washed, or a ticket you have not spent — that is unused.
