A distortion is a change that makes something twisted, bent, or no longer showing its true, normal shape or sound — a cracked speaker can cause distortion in music, and a broken mirror can cause distortion in a reflection. The word is also used for ideas and information: a 'distortion of the truth' is a version of events that has been twisted so it is no longer accurate, even if it is not a complete lie.
