A disquisition is a long, careful piece of talk or writing that works through a question in detail — a learned report, not a chat. You meet it in academic or mock-academic English; a teacher, a critic, or a newspaper columnist might offer a disquisition on a small topic. Though actually, people often use it with a raised : it can sound as if the speaker went on rather longer than anyone asked. It is not the same as a short essay, and it is not an attack. It is an inquiry written out at length.

組成From French disquisition, from Latin disquisitio, “inquiry.” That comes from disquirō, “to look into”: dis- (apart, thoroughly) + quaerō (to seek, to ask) + -tiō (the act or its result).
