Something disquieting makes you feel — not sudden fear, more a slow worry that will not sit still. News, a look, a silence, a small change in a place you know: they can all be disquieting. The word is a little formal and a little literary; in everyday talk people more often say worrying, , or it doesn’t feel right. Though actually, disquieting is quieter than scary. You use it when something is wrong in a soft way, and you cannot quite name why.

組成dis- (undo / the opposite of) + quiet (calm, still) + -ing (the kind that does this). Built on disquiet, “to take the quiet away.” The quiet piece goes back to Latin quietus, “at rest.”
