If someone is dispirited, the hope and have gone out of them. They used to care, or used to feel ready; now they feel low, tired of trying, and not very interested. It is stronger than a bit sad, and quieter than angry. You use it after something has worn people down — a lost match, a long wait with no good news, work that keeps going wrong. It is a little literary. In everyday talk people more often say down, fed up, or they've lost heart. Though actually, we use it for a group as well as a person: a dispirited team, a dispirited class. The feeling is that the inner lift has been taken out of them, not that they are lazy.
