When things or people are disparate, they are very different and do not really belong together. It is not a small difference; the pieces feel unrelated, as if they were pulled from different worlds and set side by side. A disparate group; disparate ideas in one report. This is a formal, written word. In everyday English you would say they are nothing alike, or they do not go together. Though actually, writers like it because it hints that the mix does not fit, not merely that the parts are unlike. You almost always meet it as an adjective.
